Job Fair And Career Tips For Houston Job Seekers

1. You may find opportunities you didn't even think of at the job fair. One of the benefits of a job fair is that you will have a chance to interact with recruiters from other companies you may know nothing about. Taking some time to talk to these representatives will give you a chance to learn more about opportunities they offer that you may have missed or not considered in your job search.

2. Guy likely not to be promoted: "I can not come in early this week."

3. Follow up with recruiters after the job fair. The problem with the “sit, wait, and hope strategy” most job seekers are using is that they will continue to sit, wait, and hope until the job was filled by someone else. When you are at the job fair be sure to collect as much information as you can about the company, job, and recruiter that you spoke to. Follow up the next day on conversations you had and ask for an interview. Don't let your competition snatch those jobs away from you while you sit waiting for the phone to ring.

4. Gal likely to be promoted: "I talked to that customer and got a resolution for him."

5. Go to the job fair early, but not to apply for jobs. Do you know why TV crews and newspaper reporters show up early at job fairs? It’s because the job fair is most crowded first thing in the morning. For you, however, that is a problem, because you want some face time with each employer. Employers will be very distracted first thing in the morning trying to manage the large crowd. Instead of fighting the crowd for face time, use those first couple hours of the job fair to watch and listen. Study your competition and each employer's display. What can you learn to fine tune your approach.

What If No One Calls You After A Job Fair?

Dating and job fairs have a lot in common. For example, in both cases you are meeting face to face with new people in hopes of finding your perfect match (new relationship or job), and in either case you want feedback after the meeting. What did the other party think of you? Are they interested in seeing you again or pursuing a relationship with you? What did they like about you? What didn’t they like about you? What is preventing your date from asking you out again or the employer from offering you a job?

Today, we take the web with us everywhere we go and to a degree that convenience has conditioned us to expect instantaneous answers to our questions. So it can be very frustrating when we don’t get immediate feedback. Imagine you had a date that seemed to go incredibly well, but you don’t get called afterwards. In fact, a week goes by and you didn't get called. How would you feel?

This same scenario can also happen to job seekers who use this page to find Houston job fairs. They prepare appropriately for the job fair. They look professional and talk the industry language. They have great conversation with the job fair hiring managers. The company representatives seemed very pleased with the interview and promised to quickly get back to the candidate for follow-up. However, its been a week and nothing...no phone call, no letter. How does the job seeker feel? What is going through her mind?

Why we want to be called.
eHarmony, an online dating site, made a suggestion about why we crave a call so badly. "One theory is simply that of narrative incompleteness. When you open yourself to the start of a potential relationship by going out on a date (or a few) – and it goes well- you often visualize the entire relationship (or at least all the good parts) based on this experience." The same is true with a job interview. Because it went so well, in your mind, you went ahead and finished the story. You got the job, everyone celebrated, and you went on to achieve new levels of career greatness.

It’s just one job fair; there will be many more.
But instead nothing happened and you feel empty. How do you deal with this feeling? Don't go there to begin with. Don't put all of your hope on one meeting or one trip to a single job fair. Meeting the recruiters at a job fair (or going on a date) is simply an initial exploration. You won’t be a match for every employer you meet, and everyone that meets you won’t completely connect with you. Instead of waiting for the call you can do one of two things. Be the person to make the call and ask for a second meeting, or schedule more interviews with other companies! If you get called back, great! If not, you are already working on other options. Find a Houston job fair now!

Four Essential Tips for Job Fair Success

Job fairs are a very common form of entry level recruiting in today's job market. While the internet has made it easier for job seekers to put in applications, nothing is as important as face-to-face interaction with a potential employer. While generally you would have to wait to be called for an interview to get this ever-important face time, there is another option--a job fair.

Employers with multiple positions available may host job fairs and universities or community organizations that want to create an event that is beneficial for both job seekers and employers may hold such an event as well. Both of these types of job fairs can be an excellent time to make connections and meet the people who make hiring decisions within a company. However, just showing up for a job fair does not accomplish much--only the most prepared candidates will get the best results from such an event.

If you are planning to attend any type of job fair in the future, you may want to consider these four essential job fair strategies.

Dress for Success -- While this is commonly mentioned to those on the job search, it bears repeating. Dress for the job you would like to hold. At a job fair, you may not want to dress QUITE as conservatively as you would for a job interview, make certain you are clean, neat and dressed to impress. Remember, the job fair may take several hours, so dress in clothes that will hold up to a day of being crowded in a convention center or gymnasium with hundreds of other job seekers.

Arrive Early -- If you want the best chance to connect with the companies or representatives you are most interested in meeting, try to arrive early. The most popular booths will likely attract long lines and big crowds. Try to be one of the first to arrive and then make a beeline for the companies or interviewers you'd most like to speak with.

Bring Resumes -- You want to leave the companies or representatives with whom you speak something to remember you by; a simple, basic resume is a great choice. Make sure you highlight your most impressive qualities and background and make sure you include accurate contact information or perhaps a link so they can connect with you online.

Follow Up -- During the course of the job fair, most of the company representatives will meet with dozens, if not hundreds of potential employees. If you want to stand out from the crowd, follow up on your experience. You have a great opening to call up and speak with someone in Human Resources. Call, visit or even send an email. It can open the door to more potential opportunities.
As you can see, there is more to the job fair process than may meet the eye. Take the experience seriously, but think of the job fair as an open door--you still have to walk through it. The job fair is a great way to brush up on your interview skills and make valuable connections. It's well worth the effort! Find a Houston job fair now!

Another great job search tool.
There are several reasons why volunteering while looking for work is good for you both professionally and personally. Yes, it is an excellent way to serve others, but it can also boost your job search efforts, as well as, your sense of well-being. There are several reasons why. If you plan your volunteer activities strategically there is a good chance you can learn marketable work skills, add relevant experience to your resume, and meet new people who can help you find a new job. Another benefit of volunteering is that it can fill in gaps on your resume caused by times of unemployment. The fact that you were volunteering during your time away from work says alot about your work ethic and character.

Another reason volunteering is good for you when you are out of work is that it gets your involved in a worthy cause with other people. Losing a job or struggling to find meaningful work can be demoralizing. The teamwork and camaraderie that comes with volunteering is good for your mental health during an otherwise stressful time.

5 Ways To Be Successful At Job Fairs
Perhaps the worst behavior you will see at a job fair is "groupthink". Everyone does what everyone else is doing and they all seem to do it at the same time without questioning why they are doing it. They are just doing something because everyone else seems to be doing it. If you want to be truly successful at job fairs, stand out from the group, and get the best job offers then make sure you are doing these 5 things.
