Job Fair And Career Tips For Baltimore Job Seekers

1. The very best thing you can do to be successful at a job fair isnít shining your shoes. The number one things employers want to hear from you is that you know something about the company and/or the job for which you are interested. If you really want to impress the recruiters you are approaching at the job fair, you need to have done some homework ahead of time and know something about the companies attending that day.

2. Employers routinely say that some job fair attendees come to the event with no resume or will tell the employer their resume is on their phone. Neither of those scenarios gives the employer much to work with at the job fair and actually makes the applicant appear unprepared - a job offer killer. Bring many copies of your current resume to job fairs. Employers WANT you to apply, but need a resume from you.

3. Want to get promoted? Bring solutions to your business meetings. Not more problems.

4. Go to a job fair even if you don't need / want a new job right now. By attending and actively participating at a job fair you will be able to learn about current trends in your industry, discover unadvertised opportunities, and network with other professionals in your line of work.

5. Anyone can point out problems at work. Very few can offer solutions. Which group do you fall into?

5 New Ways To Stand Out At A Job Fair

1. Donít offer a handshake; give a resume.
Giving a handshake is a traditional, acceptable, and professional business practice at any job fair. In fact the handshake is also an opportunity to show confidence, warmth, and openness. However, letís be honest. Shaking hands with one person is a lot different than shaking hands with 200 people in 2 hours at a job fair. After the first 10 or 20 people, repeated shaking of hands can become quite gross. So imagine how a hiring manager at a job fair feels when you (number 200) extends your hand?

Let the recruiter decide what she wants to do. After shaking so many hands at the job fair she may be hesitant to keep doing it. If the recruiter extends her hand to you then by all means shake her hand with confidence. However, if she does not extend her hand simply reach out with a resume. She will be secretly appreciative of your gesture.

2. Donít give a traditional resume; give a pamphlet
What happens to the 200 resumes at a Baltimore employerís table at a job fair? They all get stacked up in a nice neat pile that is easy to carry back to the office (and most likely garbage can). So how do you save your resume from becoming just more hay in a haystack? Make it look different. Traditionally, resumes are printed on 8.5 x 11 paper of various qualities and even colors. Instead of worrying about font, color, or pictures on your resume change the physical size of your resume.

Think about the Readerís Digest. The Readerís Digest always gets placed on top of the stack of magazines in any office or home. Why? Because itís half the size of regular magazines and the stack doesnít look right if the smaller magazine is on the bottom or even the middle. So itís natural to just put the smaller sized item on top. Do the same thing with your resume at the job fair. Rather than hand over a regular sized 8.5Ē x 11Ē resume, create the same content, but on 5.5Ē x 11Ē. Essentially, itís the same 8.5Ēx11Ē piece of paper, but neatly folded in half just like a sales pamphlet. This size is much more likely to be placed on top where a recruiter will continue to see it all day long. Find a Baltimore job fair now!

3. Use your smart phone in private at the job fair.
Texting and chatting with friends on your phone at a job fair is behavior that will get you rejected by recruiters. However, there is a completely legitimate use for your phone at the job fair: looking up companies in attendance so you can get information before approaching their table.

Ideally, you will have done this research prior to the job fair. However, if you get to the job fair and find a Baltimore area employer you were not expecting itís completely fine to go find a private spot and use your smart phone to find information on the company prior to approaching the recruiter. Not only is it flattering when someone took the time to learn more about you, but it also demonstrates to the hiring manager at the job fair that you care enough about your (potential) relationship by investing your own time in learning more about the company.

4. Make sure you are collecting everyone's business cards at the job fair so you can follow up with them the next day.
Yes, this is old advice you have heard time and time again, but here is where nearly everyone goes wrong. Most people will email the recruiter they met at the job fair in Baltimore.

Email is very easily put in spam or outright ignored. Email will never convey your sincerity or represent you as well as you can. You need to call the hiring manager's Baltimore office. Even if you can't get through and need to leave a voice mail you will be much further ahead than anyone else, even if for just one simple reason. Calling after the job fair shows much more confidence and initiative than sending an electronic message.

5. Hand write a neat, quick thank you note with your number on your resume.
Handwriting always gets attention. What piece of mail always gets opened first? The envelope with handwriting on it. Waitresses know that one sure fire way to increase tips is placing a handwritten thank you on the customerís bill. What is the first thing people read when opening up a greeting card? They go right to what you hand wrote yourself.

Want to get the hiring managerís attention? Immediately after the job fair mail a handwritten thank you card. 95% of all the people attending the job fair will not do this and become completely forgettable. The next 4% will email an impersonal looking message to the hiring managerís spam box. Be the 1% who eliminate the competition by handwriting a thank you card. Tip: include a reference to something you and the recruiter talked about in the card you send. That shows you were paying attention and the information you were given is important to you. Find a Baltimore job fair now!

5 Great Ways To Totally Bomb At A Job Fair
1. Dress like you are at home or on vacation.
If you are attending a Baltimore job fair an excellent way to totally blow an otherwise excellent opportunity to find a new job is to show up dressed like you are passing through on your way to Ocean City. Showing up in anything less than professional attire sends a loud and clear message to any employer that you simply don't care enough about the jobs they have open to take a few minutes and put on your Sunday finest. Show up in shorts and a ball cap and you will go home with no job offer.

2. Ask the recruiter if she is hiring.
Asking rhetorical questions at the Baltimore job fair you are attending will only get your resume moved to the bottom of the pile. Asking questions like "So what does your company do?" only demonstrates that you didn't take any initiative and research the company before you approached their representative at the job fair. Employers want to hire people who show initiative and work ethic, not people who want the answers handed to them.

3. Tell the hiring manager all about what you want.
Here is something that every adult at any Baltimore job fair needs to accept: companies don't care what you want. They don't care how many vacation days you need. They don't care about how much money you need to make to pay your car and insurance bills. They don't care that you need health insurance so you can go get your sore back massaged. Rather than telling the hiring manager what you want, tell her what you have to offer and why you are the ideal candidate they are looking for.

4. Bring your child to any of the Baltimore job fairs listed on this page.
Yes, some companies do participate in Bring Your Child To Work Day. However, there is no such thing as Bring Your Child To The Baltimore Job Fair. Not only does having your child(ren) at the job fair create a distraction, but just like your appearance, having your child with you sends a message to the employer. An employer could easily assume that you don't have access to reliable child care and thus will need additional time away from work in order to care for your kids.

5. Hand the recruiter a resume that looks like garbage.
Sure you may need to rush a little to get yourself ready for the job fair in Baltimore this morning, however, that is no excuse to hand over a resume with coffee or peanut butter stains to the recruiter. Handing the company representative a resume that smells like cigarette smoke, is wrinkled, has food / drink stains on it, or is loaded with misspellings is a total waste of your time. Why? Its like handing the recruiter a note that says "I really didn't care enough about this job fair or your time to ensure I had a clean, well written resume for you". That will ensure you leave the job fair with no employment offers. Find a Baltimore job fair now!
